Hon. John E. Porter
John E. Porter is a partner in
Hogan & Hartson’s Washington, DC law office. Before joining Hogan
& Hartson he served 21 years as Congressman from the 10th district
in Illinois. In Congress he served on the Appropriations Committee, as
Chair of the Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education;
as Vice-Chair of the Subcommittee on Foreign Operations; and as Vice-Chair
of the Subcommittee on Military Construction.
Before his election to Congress Mr. Porter served in the
Illinois House of Representatives. He received his undergraduate degree
from Northwestern, served in the U.S. Army, and graduated with distinction
from the University of Michigan Law School.
Mr. Porter was founder and co-chairman of the Congressional
Human Rights Caucus, a voluntary association of more than 250 Members
of Congress working to identify, monitor and end human rights violations
worldwide. He sponsored the legislation creating Radio Free Asia. He served
as chair of the Global Legislators Organized for a Balanced Environment
(GLOBE USA).
Mr. Porter is a member of several boards, including the Rand Corporation, PBS, Research! America, Foundation for the National Institutes of Health, the Kemper Insurance Companies, Population Resource Center in Princeton, the George C. Marshall Foundation, and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. John Porter has received more than 275 awards for his service in Congress, including: Mary Wood Lasker Award for Public Service, Edwin C. Whitehead Award for Medical Research Advocacy from Research! America, Public Service Award from the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, American Society for Cell Biology Service Award, American Society for Microbiology Distinguished Public Service Award, Award for Public Service Excellence from the Association of American Medical Colleges.
