Philip S. Kitcher, Ph.D.

Philip S. Kitcher was born in England and obtained a BA degree from Christ’s College, Cambridge. He did graduate study in the United States, receiving a PhD from Princeton University in philosophy, history, and the philosophy of science.

He taught at Vassar College; the University of Vermont; the University of Minnesota; and the University of California, San Diego, before joining Columbia University. He has served as a senior fellow at the Library of Congress, as president of the Pacific Division of the American Philosophical Association, and as editor in chief of Philosophy of Science.

His many scholarly articles range over topics in the philosophy of science, the philosophy of biology, and the philosophy of mathematics. He is the author of seven books, including Science, Truth, and Democracy (Oxford University Press, 2001) and In Mendel’s Mirror: Philosophical Reflections on Biology (Oxford University Press, 2003).
