Neal L. First, Ph.D.

Neal First, L. E. Casida Professor of Reproductive Biology and Animal Biotechnology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, has focused his research since the early 1980s on sperm and oocyte maturation, in vitro production of embryos, cloning of cattle, and methods for producing transgenic embryos.

He has received the Animal Science Morrison Award, the Upjohn Research Award, the Society for the Study of Reproduction Research Award, the National Association of Animal Breeders Research Award, the Von Humboldt Award, and the Wolf Prize in Agriculture. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and serves on the National Research Council Committee on Animal Biotechnology, Health, and the Environment. His past service includes the National Board on Ethics in Reproduction, the National Research Council Commission on Life Sciences, and committees of the Institute for Laboratory Animal Research Board on Agriculture and the Institute of Medicine.
