José Cibelli, Ph.D., D.V.M

José Cibelli did his undergraduate work in his native Argentina and earned a doctor of veterinary medicine degree from the University of La Plata in 1989.After working as a veterinarian, he came to the University of Massachusetts–Amherst, earning a PhD degree in veterinary and animal sciences in 1998.

Cibelli is a pioneer in cloning with transgenic somatic cells to produce animals and embryonic stem cells. His efforts in generating the world’s first transgenic calves by cloning, the first embryonic stem cells by nuclear transfer, and the first embryonic stem cells by parthenogenesis in primates were reported in Science, Nature Biotechnology, and Nature Medicine. Cibelli is the editor of the book Principles of Cloning (Academic Press, 2002). He was recently the vice president for research at Advanced Cell Technology in Worcester, Massachusetts
